Job Description

As a High School Spanish Teacher at Uncommon Schools, you will play a pivotal role in shaping global citizens. You will become an expert in your course content while inspiring and motivating high school students. Your classes will be a vibrant space where communicating in Spanish is at the heart of learning. You will employ a variety of instructional strategies to create an environment where students feel safe and excited to express themselves in a new language, preparing them for academic autonomy and college readiness.

Key Responsibilities

1. Instruction

  • Enhance students' bilingual skills and understanding of Spanish through a curriculum designed for Advanced Placement (AP) and collegiate level coursework.
  • Boost students' confidence in navigating authentic print and audio sources.
  • Teach essential foreign language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
  • Cultivate cultural awareness by guiding students in their language learning journey.
  • Share your passion for the Spanish language to foster a community of confident Spanish speakers.
  • Encourage students to engage in meaningful conversations in Spanish.
  • Collaborate with the Spanish department to set academic and engagement goals.

2. Data Analysis

  • Meet weekly with your principal and/or instructional coach to analyze student work samples and assessments.
  • Implement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learners in your classroom.

3. School Culture

  • Build positive relationships with students to ensure they feel seen, loved, and heard.
  • Partner with families to provide the necessary resources for their child's learning needs.
  • Engage in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
  • Participate in weekly school-wide meetings to cultivate community and model our core values.
  • Collaborate with your grade level team to develop academic goals and instructional strategies.

  • Required Experience:
    • 1-2 years of experience impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities is preferred.
    • Academic expertise in Spanish or related fields of study.
    • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher is required before employment begins.
    • While certification is not required for hiring, passing state teacher certification tests is necessary to meet MA state requirements.
    • All Commonwealth charter teachers must have an appropriate MA educator’s license or pass required MTEL(s) within the first year of employment.

Compensation

The salary for this role ranges from $57,000 to $89,000 . Starting pay is determined by various factors, including relevant full-time teaching experience, education certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. Candidates without full-time teaching experience will likely start at $57,000.
